Colombia’s Shifting Political & Economic Landscape
January 2025 has already been eventful. A recent diplomatic spat between Petro and Trump led to threats of tariffs that could have destabilized Colombia’s economy. While Petro backed down, the aftermath affected many Colombians, particularly those applying for U.S. visas. Political turbulence can quickly impact expats and locals alike, making it essential to stay informed and adaptable.
Looking forward, the best-case scenario is that Colombia maintains neutrality, allowing for trade in both the U.S. dollar and commodities from other global players. According to David Dubyne from Adapt 2030, the U.S. is likely to face continued inflation and reduced imports from China, while BRIC nations will transact in gold-backed currencies rather than the Petro Dollar. This could create stronger export opportunities for Colombian products like coffee, minerals, and textiles—potentially boosting the economy and supporting a growing expat population.

Despite stricter visa regulations and increased income requirements, expats are still drawn to Colombia. Why? Because even with inflation and bureaucracy, Colombia remains a cost-effective, culturally rich, and adventure-filleddestination.
For expats, the best strategy is to maintain foreign income in USD, Euros, or GBP, rather than relying on local job markets. Working within the Colombian economy can be challenging due to cultural and bureaucratic hurdles, making remote work or retirement income a more viable option.

Right now, we are in a slightly more volatile period, but I don’t foresee it reaching Venezuelan levels of risk where expats become high-value kidnapping targets. Instead, practicing discretion and being aware of your surroundings will continue to be key to safe living and travel.
That said, as Colombia’s economy grows—especially in exports and tourism—security in more regions will improve. However, some of the country’s biggest challenges remain education and English proficiency, making Spanish a must-have skill for anyone planning to live here.

2025 and Beyond: What’s Next for Colombia?
Colombia’s economic future hinges on investment in exports and a stronger local economy. By spreading expat income beyond major cities like Medellín, Bogotá, and Cartagena, there’s potential to create sustainable growth in emerging regions.
By 2030, I predict Colombia will either be a thriving, safe economy—or facing severe economic hardship. My bet is on the prosperous route, but it won’t be an overnight transformation.
